On September 13th, 2017, we made history. The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is now a three-time host of the Summer Olympics, having been awarded, along with the City of Los Angeles, the 2028 Summer Olympic Games. The world will once again be watching the best athletes from countries all over the globe compete for the gold inside “The Greatest Stadium in the World!”
The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, a living memorial to all who served in the U.S. Armed Forces during World War I, has been a civic treasure for generations of Angelenos. The legacy of events and individuals hosted in nine-plus-decades reads like no other: the only venue to host two Summer Olympics (Xth Olympiad in 1932, XXIIIrd Olympiad in 1984) and soon a third (XXXIVth Olympiad in 2028); home to college football’s USC Trojans since 1923 and the UCLA Bruins (1928-1981); professional football’s Los Angeles Rams (1946-1979 and 2016-2019), Raiders (1982-1994) and Chargers (1960); hosting three NFL Championships and two Super Bowls; home to the Los Angeles Dodgers (1958-1960) and the 1959 World Series; appearances by US Presidents Franklin D Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson and Ronald Reagan and international dignitaries such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Pope John Paul II and Nelson Mandela. From Mick Jagger, to the Harlem Globetrotters…from the Grateful Dead to Billy Graham, Evel Knievel and Pele, the Memorial Coliseum, named a National and California Historic Landmark in 1984, has been the stage for the unbelievable, the unforgettable, the iconic and the best in human endeavor and achievement.
Thank you to the many entities who worked together to make this a reality. We celebrate and share this historical moment with you!
Check out this video from Danny Trejo, actor and a long-time Rams fan. He not only knows his tacos, but he agrees that the Coliseum IS the “Greatest Stadium in the World”!

Today, the LA84 Foundation and Mark Ridley-Thomas of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Commission welcomed Olympians Joan Benoit Samuelson and Anita DeFrantz into the Coliseum’s esteemed Court of Honor. Benoit Samuelson won the first ever Women’s Olympic Marathon in the 1984 Summer Olympics. DeFrantz, who played a vital role in bringing the 1984 Games to Los Angeles, is not only LA84 President Emeritus and a member of the IOC, but a bronze medalist in rowing in the 1976 Games.
Located at the historic Coliseum Peristyle, the plaques that comprise the Memorial Court of Honor commemorate outstanding persons or events, athletic or otherwise, that have had a definite impact upon the history, glory and growth of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
Joan Benoit Samuelson and Anita DeFrantz are the first individual female athletes commemorated in the Court of Honor since 1961, when Mildred “Babe” Didrickson was honored.

The iconic Peristyle of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum will soon take on a look not seen in 33 years, as the large video boards, originally installed in 1984 for the Games of the XXIIIrd Olympiad, will be removed in order to restore the famed column and archway structure to its original glory. The project, commencing the week of March 27, is part of an overall $270 Million renovation of the Coliseum being undertaken by the University of Southern California and completed in time for the 2019 football season.
“Restoring the Peristyle of the 94-year old National Historic Landmark stadium to reflect the vision of the original builders and architects is a wonderful thing,” said Joe Furin, General Manager of the Coliseum, “especially when you consider that it was first shared with the world during the 1932 Olympics and enjoyed by Angelenos attending events here for over six decades.”
The two large structures, along with the advertising border that surrounds the center game clock, will be dismantled in pieces over a two week period and then trucked away to a salvage yard. This is only one phase of returning the Peristyle to its historic look. Damaged travertine limestone tiles will be replaced or fixed, the entire structure cleaned, and the restoration of the decorative mural underneath the center arch will also be undertaken. Replacing the old video boards will be two state-of-the-art, high definition display boards incorporated for the fans enjoyment into the northeast and southeast seating sections, so as to maintain the look of the Peristyle as it was originally intended.
The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, modeled after the original Roman Colosseum, was built in 1923 by John and Donald Parkinson, father and son architects. The Peristyle, consisting of the large center arch, six flanking arches on either side, and a total of 24 columns, quickly became the signature feature of the stadium. With the awarding of the Games of the Xth Olympiad in 1932 to the City of Los Angeles, the stadium was expanded to over 100,000 seats and the Olympic Cauldron was added to the Peristyle. The cauldron was first lit for the 1932 Games, as well as for the 1984 Summer Games, along with countless special events over the nearly century-long history of the Coliseum.
The Mexican National Team will Croatia in Los Angeles to prepare for upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers and the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.
The Federación Mexicana de Fútbol (FMF) and Soccer United Marketing (SUM) announced that Mexico will play the National Team of Croatia on Saturday, May 27 (4:30 p.m. PT), at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum – presented by Nissan and hosted by 2018 MLS expansion club Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC).
Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Monday, March 6 at 10 a.m. local time, via ticketmaster.com, by calling 800-745-3000 or at the Coliseum Box Office (at Gate 29).
The game is part of the landmark 15th annual Mexican National Team U.S. Tour, which kicked off on Feb. 8 in Las Vegas in a 1-0 win against Iceland in front of a record-breaking audience for soccer in the city.
Croatia, currently 16th in the FIFA Rankings, has faced off against Mexico on four different occasions, with each squad winning two games. Croatia emerged victorious during their first two matches in 1992 and 1999, while Mexico defeated Croatia in Japan during the 2002 FIFA World Cup. The last time these two nations met was during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil in a match that Mexico won 3-1 in Recife, ensuring their pass into the round of 16.
The Coliseum has welcomed the Mexican team on numerous occasions since its opening in 1923. Most recently, Mexico defeated Ecuador 1-0 in front of a sellout crowd of 88,000 fans on a 14th minute goal by striker Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez in March of 2015.
To get ready for the match, fans can visit the new official U.S. Mexican National Team E-Store, http://store.miseleccion.us/, featuring the latest team gear such as jerseys, hats, and more.
The Tour, sponsored by adidas, Advance Auto Parts, Allstate Insurance Company, Bud Light, Coca-Cola, el Jimador, Makita, Nissan, POWERADE, The Home Depot, and Wells Fargo, will visit five cities across the United States in 2016, and will be broadcast nationally on the Univision family of networks and Fútbol de Primera Radio Network.
The 2017 football schedule for defending Rose Bowl champion USC has been announced by the Pac-12 and it features seven home games in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
The schedule features three straight home games to open the season, including a rare visit by Texas, and the regular season finale against crosstown rival UCLA. Also visiting the Coliseum will be Pac-12 opponents Stanford, Utah, Arizona and Oregon State and non-conference foe Western Michigan.
Overall, USC’s 12-game schedule features five teams that played in bowls this past season and won at least eight games. The Trojans will play nine league foes in the 2017 regular season (all but Oregon and Washington).
However, for the first time since the 1995 season, the Trojans will not have a regular-season bye week, only getting a week off on the final weekend of November should they advance to the Pac-12 Championship Game on Dec. 1 or 2 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.
New season tickets, starting at $320 for all seven home games, are now available for purchase online or by calling 213-740-GOSC (4672).
Current season ticket holders can renew their tickets now by going to the USC Athletics website and clicking on “Manage My Account” under football.
