LA84 WOMEN IN SPORTS BREAKFAST WELCOMES NEW COURT OF HONOR INDUCTEES

Today, the LA84 Foundation and Mark Ridley-Thomas of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Commission welcomed Olympians Joan Benoit Samuelson and Anita DeFrantz into the Coliseum’s esteemed Court of Honor. Benoit Samuelson won the first ever Women’s Olympic Marathon in the 1984 Summer Olympics. DeFrantz, who played a vital role in bringing the 1984 Games to Los Angeles, is not only LA84 President Emeritus and a member of the IOC, but a bronze medalist in rowing in the 1976 Games.

Located at the historic Coliseum Peristyle, the plaques that comprise the Memorial Court of Honor commemorate outstanding persons or events, athletic or otherwise, that have had a definite impact upon the history, glory and growth of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Joan Benoit Samuelson and Anita DeFrantz are the first individual female athletes commemorated in the Court of Honor since 1961, when Mildred “Babe” Didrickson was honored.

Watch the Coliseum Peristyle Restoration in Real Time!

To view live-streaming of the removal of the video boards, click here.

The iconic Peristyle of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum will soon take on a look not seen in 33 years, as the large video boards, originally installed in 1984 for the Games of the XXIIIrd Olympiad, will be removed in order to restore the famed column and archway structure to its original glory.  The project, commencing the week of March 27, is part of an overall $270 Million renovation of the Coliseum being undertaken by the University of Southern California and completed in time for the 2019 football season.

“Restoring the Peristyle of the 94-year old National Historic Landmark stadium to reflect the vision of the original builders and architects is a wonderful thing,” said Joe Furin, General Manager of the Coliseum, “especially when you consider that it was first shared with the world during the 1932 Olympics and enjoyed by Angelenos attending events here for over six decades.”

The two large structures, along with the advertising border that surrounds the center game clock, will be dismantled in pieces over a two week period and then trucked away to a salvage yard. This is only one phase of returning the Peristyle to its historic look.  Damaged travertine limestone tiles will be replaced or fixed, the entire structure cleaned, and the restoration of the decorative mural underneath the center arch will also be undertaken.  Replacing the old video boards will be two state-of-the-art, high definition display boards incorporated for the fans enjoyment into the northeast and southeast seating sections, so as to maintain the look of the Peristyle as it was originally intended.

The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, modeled after the original Roman Colosseum, was built in 1923 by John and Donald Parkinson, father and son architects.  The Peristyle, consisting of the large center arch, six flanking arches on either side, and a total of 24 columns, quickly became the signature feature of the stadium.  With the awarding of the Games of the Xth Olympiad in 1932 to the City of Los Angeles, the stadium was expanded to over 100,000 seats and the Olympic Cauldron was added to the Peristyle.  The cauldron was first lit for the 1932 Games, as well as for the 1984 Summer Games, along with countless special events over the nearly century-long history of the Coliseum.

$1B George Lucas Museum To Be Built In Exposition Park

January 10th, 2017

Lucas Museum Plans to Build in Los Angeles

From the Board of Directors, Lucas Museum of Narrative Art

“After extensive due diligence and deliberation, the Board of Directors of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is pleased to announce plans to build the museum in Exposition Park in Los Angeles. We have been humbled by the overwhelmingly positive support we received from both San Francisco and Los Angeles during our selection process. Settling on a location proved to be an extremely difficult decision precisely because of the desirability of both sites and cities.

The board wishes to extend a special thanks to Mayor Ed Lee and the San Francisco Board of Supervisors for their tremendous efforts and engagement. While each location offers many unique and wonderful attributes, South Los Angeles’s Promise Zone best positions the museum to have the greatest impact on the broader community, fulfilling our goal of inspiring, engaging and educating a broad and diverse visitorship. Exposition Park is a magnet for the region and accessible from all parts of the city. As a museum uniquely focused on narrative art, we look forward to becoming part of a dynamic museum community, surrounded by more than 100 elementary and high schools, one of the country’s leading universities as well as three other world-class museums.

Now we turn our attention to finalizing the details and building what we believe will be one of the most imaginative and inclusive art museums in the world—a global destination that all Angelenos and Californians will be proud to call their own.”

Go Metro to the L.A. Rams’ Games!

METRO NEWS

Go Metro to the L.A. Rams Fan Fest this August 6th at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, and to all upcoming L.A. Rams preseason and regular season football games!

Los Angeles Rams fans are encouraged to use the Metro bus and rail system to get to the upcoming Rams Fan Fest this Saturday, Aug. 6 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, as well as to all upcoming Rams preseason and regular season football games.

Due to limited parking available in and around the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the Metro Expo Line is a great connection to the venue via Expo Park/USC station or Expo/Vermont station adjacent to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

To make travel more convenient for fans, Metro will add service to the Expo Line on game days to run every six minutes instead of every 12 minutes. The additional service will be offered two hours before and after the game.

The public is reminded to purchase a $3.50 round-trip fare at the beginning of trips to avoid lines when the games are over. Each person, including children over the age of 5, must have a valid TAP card and remember to tap before each boarding. In addition, when leaving the Coliseum, signage will be provided to direct those who are going toward Santa Monica to board at Expo Park/USC Station, and those going into downtown Los Angeles to board trains at Expo/Vermont Station.

The Metro Expo Line can be easily accessed via the Metro Rail system with connections at 7th Street/Metro Center in downtown Los Angeles to the Metro Red/Purple lines, and at Pico Station to the Metro Blue line. Fans using the Metro Gold Line can make an easy transfer at Union Station to the Metro Red/Purple lines for a connection to the Expo Line. Enhanced service will also be provided on the Metro Red/Purple and Gold lines during game days.

Parking is available at the North Hollywood Red Line Station and the Universal City/Studio City Red Line Station in the San Fernando Valley, as well as many Gold Line stations, including APU/Citrus College, Azusa Downtown, Irwindale, Duarte/City of Hope, Monrovia, Arcadia and Sierra Madre Villa in East Pasadena, Fillmore in Pasadena, Heritage Square, Lincoln/Cypress, Indiana in Boyle Heights and Atlantic in East Los Angeles. Additional parking is also available at several station locations along the Expo Line, including La Cienega/Jefferson, Culver City, Expo/Sepulveda, Expo/Bundy, 26th Street/Bergamot and 17th Street/SMC. For the Metro Green Line, ample parking is available at nearly all stations between Norwalk and Redondo Beach.

Those fans coming from the San Gabriel Valley or the South Bay area can use the Metro Silver Line, with parking available at either Harbor Gateway Transit Center or El Monte Bus Station. Customers can exit at 37th Street/USC station along the I-110 Express Lanes and walk a few blocks to the Coliseum via Flower Street. Roundtrip fare on the Silver Line is just $5 and each person must have a valid TAP card to ride the Silver Line. TAP vending machines are available at both Harbor Gateway Transit Center and El Monte Bus Station.

For a safer environment and speedier entry, there is a new Coliseum clear bag policy this year. Fans are advised not to bring bags unless in a clear plastic see-through bag. Prohibited are all back packs, purses, fanny packs, camera cases, binocular cases, etc. You can find more details at Be Clear On Game Day Safety.

With the opening of the Gold Line extension to Azusa and the Expo Line Extension to Santa Monica earlier this year, Metro now operates 105 miles of Metro Rail throughout the county and fans are urged to use both Metro trains and buses to the Coliseum. For specific routes and schedule information visit Metro.net.

The Los Angeles Lakers called the Sports Arena home upon moving to Los Angeles from their native Minneapolis (from 1960-67, NBA); as did the Clippers (from San Diego, 1984-99, NBA); USC Basketball (1959-2006, NCAA); UCLA Basketball (1959-65, NCAA); the Cobras (1988, Arena Football); the Kings (1967); the Ice Dogs (1995-96, IHL); the Blades (1961-67, WHL); the Sharks (1972-74, WHA), and the Stars (1968-70, ABA).

Major concerts at the Arena have included The Who, The Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, Green Day, the Killers, U2, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Black Sabbath, Pearl Jam and countless other national and internationally known artists. Bruce Springsteen played 38 concerts at the Sports Arena, calling the building “the dump that jumps!”
