“This MLK Day arrives at a defining moment for Los Angeles,” said Deborah Brutchey, Executive Director of L.A. Works. “Healing and justice don’t happen in isolation; they’re built when people show up for one another. The Concourse of Heroes: A Living Tribute to Service and Legacy

For more than a century, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum has stood as a powerful symbol of unity, perseverance, and civic pride. Originally dedicated in 1923 as a living memorial to the men and women of the United States Armed Forces who served in World War I, the LA Memorial Coliseum has since become a place where generations have gathered to witness history, from championship triumphs to moments of national significance.

Today, the LA Memorial Coliseum continues to honor its founding mission with the unveiling of the Concourse of Heroes, a new visual installation that pays tribute to those whose lives and legacies intertwine with both military service and the historic stadium itself.

Located on the LA Coliseum’s upper concourse in section UC10-14, the Concourse of Heroes celebrates athletes, public servants, and community figures who exemplify courage, sacrifice, and excellence both on and off the field. Each image and story featured in the collection reflects the enduring connection between the LA Coliseum’s role as a “Memorial to the Defenders of Freedom” and its ongoing story as a gathering place for generations.

From Louis Zamperini, the “Unbreakable” Olympian and World War II hero, to Al Davis, who served in the U.S. Army before becoming an NFL icon, the Concourse of Heroes showcases the extraordinary lives of those who represent the spirit of service and the pursuit of greatness.

Concourse of Heroes Honorees:

Through these stories, the Concourse of Heroes connects the LA Coliseum’s past to its present, honoring the men and women who have defended freedom, inspired generations, and contributed to the legacy of Los Angeles itself.

As visitors walk the concourse, they are invited to reflect on the courage and commitment of these individuals and to remember that the LA Memorial Coliseum remains, above all, a living memorial dedicated to the values of service, honor, and perseverance.

New Videoboard, Expanded Concessions Offerings Highlight Enhanced Game Day Experience at the Coliseum for 2025 Season

LOS ANGELES — USC Athletics and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum are set to deliver a reimagined game day experience for Trojan fans this fall, highlighted by the debut of a brand-new 5-million-pixel high-definition west videoboard, expanded concessions offerings, and increased fan engagement opportunities.

“We’re excited to improve the game day atmosphere inside the Coliseum this year with enhancements that elevate our atmosphere, celebrate Trojan traditions, and create an unmatched experience on Saturdays,” said Charles Griffin Cale Director of Athletics Jen Cohen. “Improved fan engagement and increased support for our student-athletes are key pillars in our map to win the new era of college sports, and we are committed to doing everything we can to build the best home field environment possible for our student-athletes.”

Next-Generation Videoboard

The centerpiece of an offseason of upgrades and improvements, the Coliseum’s west videoboard has been fully replaced with a state-of-the-art LED display featuring more than 5.3 million pixels and nearly 6,000 square feet of display space.

The upgrade includes a full control system that will bring sharper visuals, improved reliability, and more dynamic in-game content, ensuring fans in the stadium have an enhanced view of the action.

Expanded Concessions & Premium Offerings

Fans will enjoy the most robust food and beverage program in Coliseum history, thanks to 22 new points of sale and refreshed spaces throughout the venue. Highlights include:

  • New Menu Items: Mushroom torta, loaded mac and cheese, hot honey chicken sandwich, chicken & waffles, lobster rolls, tri-tip hoagies, and more.
  • Grab-and-Go Markets: Three new self-service locations on the lower concourse and two on the upper concourse.
  • Beer & Spirits Expansion: Full stadium access to spirits (beyond beer and wine), a new Coors Beer Cave at Tunnel 15, and self-serve draft “beer jets” at Tunnels 17 and 21.
  • Renovated Fight On Grill near Gate 19 for faster service.

Infrastructure & Tradition

USC continues to invest in the Coliseum’s infrastructure and heritage to ensure fans enjoy a world-class experience at a historic venue. All 1,100 Lou Galen Club seats have been replaced for upgraded comfort, and Phase II of the Legacy Walkway is now complete with more than 400 new fan pavers installed at Olympic Plaza below the Peristyle.

In addition, USC has begun long-planned concrete repairs in partnership with the Coliseum Commission as part of its commitment to preserving and maintaining the stadium. Managed by Spalling Concrete, the work includes repairs to the exterior façade, upper concourse, Peristyle arcade and parapet walls, and player tunnels. While scaffolding and protective netting will be visible throughout the project, normal operations will continue, and no seating areas or concessions will be closed. The work should have minimal impact on the fan experience and is scheduled for completion in October 2026.

New Traditions, Same Trojan Spirit

Beyond facility upgrades, USC is enhancing gameday traditions to ensure fans build lasting connections and forge lifelong memories all season long.

  • Tunnel Captains: A lineup of Trojan legends and L.A. icons will lead the team out of the tunnel each game. Tunnel captains will be announced each week.
  • Lighting of the Torch: Fans join Traveler and a Trojan legend in an enhanced fourth-quarter rally tradition.
  • Game Themes: From the Big Ten home premiere vs. Michigan State, to Friday Night Lights with a drone show, to “Paint the Coli Cardinal” vs. UCLA, each game will feature a unique atmosphere.

And, of course, the Spirit of Troy will anchor the day with high-energy performances from pregame through postgame.

Fan-First Focus

As part of its commitment to increased and improved fan engagement, USC will conduct fan surveys after all seven home games this season. Results will be used to make real-time improvements during the 2025 season and to help shape long-term planning for 2026 and beyond.

With these enhancements, the Coliseum continues to cement itself as THE PLACE TO BE on Saturdays in Los Angeles.

LA28 Unveils 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Opening and Closing Ceremony Locations

The 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Ceremonies will be shared between the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and the Stadium in Inglewood, showcasing Los Angeles’ unique blend of history and innovation

Los Angeles, CA (May 8, 2025) – Today, LA28 confirmed that the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and the Stadium in Inglewood will serve as the official venues for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Largely consistent with the 2017 bid plan, this announcement follows updates to the Olympic venue plan and precedes updates to the Paralympic venue plan, reflecting a revision to the 2028 Paralympic Closing Ceremony location with all other Ceremonies remaining at their original venue designation.

“The venues selected for the 2028 Opening and Closing Ceremonies will highlight Los Angeles’s rich sporting history and cutting-edge future, showcasing the very best that LA has to offer on the world stage,” said LA28 Chairperson and President Casey Wasserman. “These two extraordinary venues will create an unforgettable experience, welcoming fans from across the globe to an Olympic and Paralympic Games like never before and concluding what will go down as one of the most incredible Games in history.”

“Today’s announcement marks a proud milestone as the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum will become the first venue in history to host three Olympic Games,” said Mayor Karen Bass of Los Angeles. “For over a century, the Coliseum has been a landmark host to some of the most iconic moments in all of sports history. That story continues in 2028 as our City and our region welcomes the world for what will be the greatest Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

“As a proud LA28 Venue City, the City of Inglewood is honored to play such a pivotal role in the 2028 Games,” said Mayor James T. Butts, Jr. of Inglewood. “Our stadium is one of the most impressive in the world and will deliver an incredible experience for thousands of in-person fans, with millions more watching from home, as we come together to celebrate the Opening Ceremonies of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

“The University of Southern California is excited to welcome the world to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” said Carol L. Folt, President of the University of Southern California. “Our Trojan football stadium is a national landmark featuring the iconic 1932 and 1984 Olympic torch, and in 2028 will once again make history as the first stadium to host events for three Olympic Games. It’s an honor for us to contribute to the Olympic Opening celebration and host both the Olympic and Paralympic Closing Ceremonies in 2028.”

“Sports has the power to inspire and unite people of all backgrounds, generations, and experiences, and the Olympic and Paralympic Games serve as a model for how this unparalleled platform of sport can bridge the world,” said E. Stanley Kroenke, Los Angeles Rams Owner/Chairman.  “When we built our stadium, it was with the vision of transforming Los Angeles and bringing the biggest global events in sports and entertainment to our region. We are honored that the world will come together at our venue and celebrate the Opening Ceremonies for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

On July 14, 2028, the Olympic Opening Ceremony will be shared between the LA Memorial Coliseum and the Stadium in Inglewood, creating an unprecedented dual-venue celebration that will earn the Coliseum the unique distinction as the first venue in history to host events for three Olympic Games while also marking the Stadium in Inglewood’s Olympic debut. The use of both venues strategically aligns with their respective roles as competition venues for Athletics and Swimming, accommodating the unique scheduling adjustment for the 2028 edition of the Games, with Athletics moved to the first week and Swimming to the second. Both venues will feature artistic elements that will capture the rich culture of Los Angeles, with the specific activities to be identified through the creative development process leading up to the LA28 Games.

The Olympic Closing Ceremony will take place on July 30, 2028, at the LA Memorial Coliseum, an iconic venue that will once again shine as the world’s greatest athletes come together for one final, unforgettable celebration. The Olympic Closing Ceremony will be a powerful tribute to the spirit of the Games, further solidifying the Olympic Movement into the history of Los Angeles forever.

The Paralympic Opening Ceremony will ignite in the Stadium in Inglewood on August 15, 2028. This incredible venue will set the stage to showcase the spectacular scale and magnitude of the limitless possibilities for LA’s first Paralympic Games in one of the most modern and impressive stadiums in the world.

On August 27, 2028, the Paralympic Closing Ceremony will be hosted at one of the most storied Games venues of all time, the LA Memorial Coliseum. This presents an opportunity for the Paralympic Games to write a new chapter in the venue’s history, cementing its place in Los Angeles’ history and creating an impact that will be commemorated for generations to come. The Paralympic Closing Ceremony marks the final moments of the LA28 Games, creating an unforgettable legacy that will forever connect the Olympic and Paralympic Movement to Los Angeles.

Additional information regarding the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Ceremonies will be identified and shared at a later date. All confirmed Olympic sports and venues announced to date are available for reference on www.la28.org. The updated Paralympic venue plan will all be announced at a later date following review and approval by the International Paralympic Committee Governing Board.
